Review of the Hunter 18.5 by Will

Year built 1989
Location of boat So. Carolina
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I got it for a good price and it has allowed me to do some overnight trips.
Gear that's been added Depth finder, mast light, new battery, sump pump.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Light weight boat that most light trucks can pull.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It can be a real pain to get back on the trailer with the fixed keel. The cockpit drain easily clogs and can back up into cabin. Doesn't have enough head room in cabin.
Sailing characterisitcs The Hunter 18.5 is very stable in the light wind conditions I've sailed it in.
Motoring characterisitcs I use a 4hp 4 stroke Tohatsu and it powers it up to 7 knots. Even going against the tide it moves well. Steering is easy.
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments A great beginner boat! Best if it can be left in the water instead of trailering.
