Review of the Hunter 26 by alan derrick

Year built 1996
Location of boat River Tamar Plymouth Devon England
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES Given the requirements and our needs at the time also our limited sailing experience
Gear that's been added Basic navigational aids Sprayhood
Structural or complex improvements NO But I would be very interested to hear of any
The boat's best features Easy to sail and gain experience Large open cockpit Easy to launce and rig Good below decks (BUT ONLY FOR TWO)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Its quoted as a six berth you would have to be very close freinds to call it that Main problem lack of bow and midship cleats Rudder has lifted making tiller VERY hard to control both times did not realise problem and both times in rough water my wife would have been unable to steer boat in this condition
Sailing characterisitcs At present only in force 3-4 but handles well its a bit light and does bounce about a bit but what expect from a light displacement boat so no complants
Motoring characterisitcs Good in calm weather, outboard feels vulnerable in rougher water, difficult to motor in reverse until I started to use tiller and engine together
Liveability Exellent for TWO (or if you have a young family) galley good double berth under cockpit exellent large table in cabin exellent large open cockpit exellent (much admired by bigg er boats)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Purchased in UK from OPAL MARINE good service
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
