Review of the Hunter 170 by Harvey Ibbotson

Year built 2002
Location of boat Columbia, TN
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would definately buy this boat again. I highly recommend this boat for new and experienced sailors.
Gear that's been added I bought the boat with ever option except a spinnaker. Seat cusions are a must.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features I only day sail and trailer to and from the lake/ ocean, so the ease of setting the mast and sail up is a plus.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have broken the rudder off of the mounting position. Only a couple of five dollar parts, but ended the day of sailing. Now I keep extras just in case. I also don't like the key ring style hoops/ pins that hold a few things in place. They are a little hard to work with at times.
Sailing characterisitcs The 170 is very quick to respond to the wind. I have sailed her on the lake in light and heavy winds. She is a handful when the wind gets bad. I have even had the thrill of turning her over (aided by inexperience and a storm front). She rights with very, very little effort (thanks to the football). She even proved a fine boat for the ocean. I sailed her from Gulf Shores, AL. to the Flora-Bama bar and back(something I had to do).
Motoring characterisitcs I have a small 2 HP on the back and she pushes the 170 great. Steering with the rudder and the motor in a fixed position is what works for me.
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have contacted hunter via email and phone and they were very helpful to me.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought my boat used from an individual. It was only a couple of months old.
Other comments My original plan was to buy a larger boat with a cabin. I am so glad I didn't. This is a very fun boat for me. If I ever get a larger boat, I will keep this one for the sheer thrill of it. Myself and one other adult is what usually makes up my crew, but she has plenty of room for more. I would love to see more 170's on my lake. Hunter, thanks for making a great sailboat.
