Review of the Hunter 26 by John C Pollitt

Year built 1995
Location of boat Lake Wawasee, IN
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, for the use I have for it now. Wanted a boat big enough to spend time on without going to a keel boat. Price was also a consideration, as I didn't want to put too much money into a boat I only planned on having for about 4 years before retiring and moving up to a liveaboard.
Gear that's been added Putting in knot/depth unit w/another elec. panel and solid vang over the winter, as well as a pop-top. Also bought handheld GPS and VHF,so as to take them with me when I get a bigger boat as backups. Will probably add a water tank under the V berth also. Came with lazy jacks and CDI roller furling.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Easy to singlehand, interior room.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Like others, I find the plumbing to be very cheap.
Sailing characterisitcs Good boat in light air. Has a real stable feel in stronger wind.
Motoring characterisitcs I have an old 8hp Mariner that moves it along quite well, but basically only use the motor to get in and out of the channel my slip is in.
Liveability Good room for a boat this size. I am quite comfortable overnighting, or just hanging out on her after a day's sailing. If I was keeping it longer, would add pressure H/C water w/a transom shower.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No contact with Hunter
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Have nothing but good things to say about Rooke Sails. I'm in northern Indiana and they are in Memphis. They treated me very well and went the extra yard for me in my purchase.
Other comments If I wasn't planning on moving up to a bigger boat, I could easily see keeping this one. Does everything I want. And for a singlehander, there is nothing I've needed help to do on her.
