Review of the Hunter 37 by Gus Sanchez

Year built 1987
Location of boat Miami
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES, A lot of boat for the money. Great value.
Gear that's been added Stack Pack sailstorage system made by UK. Took the work out of mainsail handaling.
Structural or complex improvements Changed the engine mounts, new stainless steel shaft and a three blade Sailer prop. Now it motors great without any vibrations. Replaced ports with original Beckson. Some still leak.
The boat's best features Performance and ease of handaling. I can sail it by myself. Interior space is also a plus.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Make sure you check the aluminum holding tanks, water and fuel. Hunter made a mistake putting in aluminum tanks. They will leak and need replacement. Most Hunters of older years need tank replacement. Mine does! Most of the beckson plastic ports leak. Get a good surveyor. Most important, educated yourself on this site. I learned of it after I bought my boat.
Sailing characterisitcs Sailed in 20 kts of wind and six foot seas. No problem.
Motoring characterisitcs Excellent after new engine mounts, shaft a propeller. will cruise all day at 2,400 rpm., at 6.5 knots. Very smooth.
Liveability Plenty of living space. Storage is limited for this size boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent! Very helpful. Will go out of their way to be of help. I had heard this from Hunter owners and it's true!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought it from Florida Yachts. Delt wit Andre. Totally painless.
Other comments Best boat I've had. Previously owned a Cal 31 and a Lancer 36.
