If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. It's a great value and a good beginners boat.
Gear that's been added Modified traveller. Added storm jib.Padeyes for harnessesBruce anchor
Structural or complex improvements Rechalked two portlights
The boat's best features Easy of handlingGreat sailing characteristicsForgivingnessThe boat inspires confidence
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leaks around toe railLeaks around portlightsCockpit drain hose difficult to reachBilge drain in an awkward place (out the transom)
Sailing characterisitcs Boat initially tender but stiffens up around 15 -20 degrees of heelSails really well on all waters from rivers, to bays and ocean sailingHandles well in 6' seas, with short intervals Develops weather helm earlyCan be sailed reasonably well under main alone but prefers to have main and jibPerforms well on almost all points of sail, downwind sailing without a spinnaker seems to be the exception. The boat can take a lot more than I want to
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 8 hp outboard and found it to be sufficient even in the currents of the Hudson RiverThe transom will get swamped with two heavy adults far back in the cockpit with a following sea. I've had the bracket half submerged in the chopWhen backing out of the slip I use the motor directly without the tiller
Liveability I lived aboard for almost 2 years on the Hudson Riverin NY harbor. Except for the lack of standing headroom there were few problems for one person. A locker and fuel during cabin heater would have be nice. I've had 4 adults aboard for the weekend which seemsto be about the limit for extended company.
