Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Mickey

Year built 1984
Location of boat Jamaica Bay, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely would buy this boat again and if I were shopping for a new boat it would be a new Hunter.
Gear that's been added I am the second owner of this boat and the first owner bought everything top shelf as far as winches and other hardware. I have added only a GPS.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features The way she points into the wind, the way she handles in rough seas, very stable, very comfortable and roomy.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The on board water system needs to be redesigned (I'm sure it has been in newer boats). Too many insecure fittings and the water is lost into the bilge.
Sailing characterisitcs My comments about the way she sails are all positive.
Motoring characterisitcs I believe she is underpowered. The Yanmar inboard diesel is dependable and always starts and runs well. I just think it's too small for the size and weight of my boat. It is very economical and fuel goes a long way.
Liveability I've not actually lived aboard but everything I have used functions well except for the previously mentioned water system.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have never had to deal with Hunter directly.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from Coney's Marine in Huntington, NY and they were honest, up front and fair with me.
Other comments I'd been sailing for more than 10 years before I became a Hunter owner and had owned sailboats by different builders. I had never even sailed on anyone elses Hunter. My Hunter 30 is the first and only Hunter ever to live at my Yacht club and there are approx. twenty to 30 sailboats moored there, in addition to many power boats.
