Review of the Hunter 356 by Mark Millham

Year built 2002
Location of boat Portland, ME
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! A good, stable and so-far forgiving boat. Handles well in close quarters docking, and maneuverable at relatively slow speeds. Stalls around 2 knots. Very roomy and easily acessible equipment
Gear that's been added Turning blocks for the jib sheets
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features The stability in a blow. Even over 30-35% in a blow, she tracks straight as an arrow, and "feels" solid underneath you.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had several systems problems, mostly to do with the comissioning of the vessel. Make sure you turn EVERYTHING on and validate it before taking delivery! Few problems intially with the Seldon rig. The stiff sail requires great effort to furl unitl broken in. Our is getting there. I would probably choose the regular mast and sail if I had a choice again.
Sailing characterisitcs Traacks well in 4-6 foot seas, both with and into the waves, and with or without accompanying winds.
Motoring characterisitcs Backs up like a car! Need to get the momentum going, then is a dream i fyou stay on top of her. Motors at 6.5 kts @ 3K rpm and into 15kt winds!
Liveability Functional. Storage is pentiful, but hard to access quickly in the salon. Freezer seems somewhat oversized for the type of sailing I do
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I will talk about the dealer one on one if there is an interest in this further
