Review of the Hunter 33.5 by Brent Headberg

Year built 1990
Location of boat West Palm Beach, FL
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I wasn't a big Hunter fan until I purchased our Hunter 335. The quality of workmanship and creature comforts are a big feature in all Hunter sailboats. It would of been fun to own this boat brand new from the factory, but even after 12 years since it was built, everything still shows new. Hunter quality will show for many years to come
Gear that's been added I have only added a few minor conveniences, since this vessel didn't have it installed from the factory: Garmin GPS Map 182C Hour Meter next to engine instrument panel 5 watt solar panel Battery AMP meter at battery switch Fixed aluminum tube & canvas cockpit awning
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features The design of the cockpit seating at angles to make sailing more comfortable are a great feature that most sailboats neglect. The interior cabinet and joiner work is above the standard that most other manufacturers provide.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Raymarine Autohelm ST4000+ quit working...had it repaired for $300. Cockpit and transom hatches aren't weather stripped to prevent leakage for washdown. The only real thing that bothers me is it has a slight list to starboard at rest, due to all the equipment, dinette and galley being on that side. Strange location of the engine shutdown cable located in the galley
Sailing characterisitcs The Hunter 335 is a very responsive boat in all wind conditions. Very easy to sail single-handed with all sail controls in the cockpit.
Motoring characterisitcs My boat has 2GM 18hp Yanmar. It has all the power I've ever needed. The boat does have a tendency to steer to the left (hands off).
Liveability The 335 could be used as short term livaboard for 2 people, no problem.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter has responded in 24 hours with several questions I have asked thru their email support.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I purchased this boat thru a broker who is also a Hunter dealer. Esserman Yachts, Ft. Lauderdale. Great people there.
Other comments Sometime in the future I plan to trade up to a larger Hunter, possibly the 386.
