Review of the Hunter 26 by Eric Hartsough

Year built 1994
Location of boat Denver, CO
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? My wife and I really enjoy the boat. We started with a Venture 17 then to a Macgreggor 26D with the Hunter 26 being in the future. We purchased the Hunter 26 the fall of 2001 at Rocky Mountain Boat Works. They have been great to deal with. Our boat is slipped at Chatfield Lake near Denver. We spend a lot of time on it and looking to convince my wife to move to the Hunter 29.5
Gear that's been added Up graded the electrical, water system, dual batteries, bimini, solar panel, stern BBQ and cushions
Structural or complex improvements Looking to refit the tiller to wheel as operating the tiller along with the engine is very complex. Cannot see over the deck while motoring in the dock area. Also problems in backing into the slip with side winds.
The boat's best features Plenty of open area in the cabin for guests. Enjoy the stern rail seats. The Hunter 26 is a great boat for 2 people to spend a weekend on.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leaks around the hatch cover. Plastic strips breaking around the companionway door opening. Outboard engine controls hard to operate while using the tiller regarding seeing over the deck area. As there isn't a parts manuel, there is confusion on ordering parts with our Dealer in Lyons, CO
Sailing characterisitcs Really enjoy the way it handles in light or moderate wind. Colorado wind keeps you guessing so we have to keep on our toes. The boat is enjoyable to be on
Motoring characterisitcs Would perfer to have onboard controls for the engine. The engine that came with the boat in 1994 will not hold its speed unless you hold to the grip control. We find that it handles well with around 4 knots
Liveability Plenty of sleeping area in the stern berth and with the table down, we can sleep two very well in the forward area. My wife enjoys the bathroom (Head) over backing into the Macgreggor 26D.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Worked with Greg Emerson at Hunter. He was very knowledgeable in getting me set up with a line of parts and problems with the hatch leaks
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Rocky Mountain Boat Works employees were very helpful.
Other comments We enjoy the boat and look to upgrading to the 29.5 in the future
