Review of the Hunter 40 by Jerry Holloway

Year built 1986
Location of boat michigan city , indiana
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes, our experience with Windswept has been limited since we just purchased but we are very happy with the boat.
Gear that's been added no
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features aft stateroom, saloon well laid out.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. this is an '86 boat. Both heads were leaking, main shower sump would not work. one of the nico solar fans will not work. I have been told by Hunter that there are no systems layouts available, (unable to locate some tank shutoffs etc.).
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs we have covered about 50 nautical miles under power and the boat and engine were fine. The boat has Autohelm and the wheel squeeks loudly at every turn of the wheel. still trying find an answer to this one.
Liveability excellent. Aft stateroom is confortable and quiet. hatchs and ports create nice cross breezes.Starboard setee is difficult to access.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) willing to help but unable to provide any information.referred me to this web site.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any from a broker in Chicago. the experience was not pleasant. It is very difficult to have him operate as a representative for the seller and for the buyer.
Other comments with all the Hunter's out there I am disappointed that information regarding my '86, 40' is so difficult to come by. I'm convinced that after looking at many 38'-42' sailboats this is the best boat for the money.
