Review of the Hunter 212 by Rick Klages

Year built 1965
Location of boat Long Island
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added Clam (jam) cleat to mast above main cleat. See below reference solo sail raising. Thinking of simple auto pilot, lazy jacks, Harken ball bearing main track with cars. Sail cover. Mooring etc...
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Size, weight, price and style. Towing with Toyota 4cyl 4x4 (TRD)is no trouble.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Can be hard to raise the sails when sailing solo. The tiller/rudder is somewhat light and will turn as soon as dropped, turning the boat away and filling the sail. The Boat needs to be right into the eye of the wind to hoist the main. This coupled with the light tiller/rudder makes for some running up and back in the cockpit. Shock cording the tiller slows this effect. Motoring at the same time also helps. Need to find a good place to keep this boat on the water, getting tired of the time it takes to set it up and take it down. (about an hour each way).
Sailing characterisitcs Overall good, Upwind excellent, downwind seems just a bit slow but not too much so. Very dry even in big waves. Can be a bit tender in gusty winds. Forward sail controls hard to reach solo.
Motoring characterisitcs Using 2 hp. honda 4 stroke. Just fine.
Liveability Very nice for day trips. Would consiter overnights.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Delt with HCT (used to be JY) in East Lime Ct. Gave me a nice tour of the factory.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sailaction in South Hampton Long Island NY. Great. Joe made the trip to HCT with me.
Other comments Love this boat.
