Review of the Hunter 212 by Scott Townsley

Year built 1999
Location of boat Long Beach Island, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably not. While I like the boat generally - the flimsy tiller is dangerous.
Gear that's been added Added swivel base for jib sheets - much easier to single hand now. Was told by JY Director of Operations when I bought the boat (before production started) that the rigging for raising the center board would be changed so that it could be raised from the cockpit. Of course, that wasn't true - so now I'm looking for a solution.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Stable - fairly fast
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Let's see - the plastic composite gudgeons broker the second time out. JY told me that I probably ran the boat aground and that broke the gudgeons - then a month later they sent all owner replacements made cast aluminum. At least the rudder hasn't fallen off again. Originally, sail would not raise all the way. JY told the dealer that the sail was a "loose footed" sail. Dealer called Doyle (sailmaker) who said that was absolutely untrue. Finally got it to raise all the way up - but how bad is it when the manufacturer either doesn't know that the sail isn't loose footed - or lies to you. Complained about the tiller (barely upgraded from the 17) repeatedly. Now it has cracks in it - and JY won't return my calls or respond to emails. See other reviews to see how bad this tiller/rudder set up is. Rudder kicks up repeatedly also. Companionway door leaks. JY told me it was because I was keeping the boat in the water (like that should make a difference). Now its on a lift and it still leaks.
Sailing characterisitcs Fairly fast and relatively stable
Motoring characterisitcs Works well with a 4 stroke Yamaha 4 long shaft
Liveability Small cabin - but its large enough to handle the head, equipment, etc.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have dealt with JY. See above comments. When the rudder fell off I called Hunter who had Dave Eck call me. Nice to hear from the boat builder when you have a problem like that. Now, however, JY has fallen off the face of the earth. I rate JY frustrating to impossible to deal with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great dealer - Moorehouse Sailmaker in Medford NJ
Other comments BE CAREFUL ABOUT BUYING THIS BOAT! There are safety issues with the tiller/rudder, which JY doesn't appear to be addressing.
