Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Dave

Year built 1981
Location of boat St. Petersburg
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It's a great first cruiser. Sails well, easy to handle, no surprises. The only difficulty has been with the awful reverse prop walk when backing.
Gear that's been added Upgraded the electrical system to make sure I had galvanic isolation, proper marine wiring, etc. Previous owner had put on an automobile charger. Other than that, replaced odds and ends, such as lines, etc.
Structural or complex improvements No, and don't intend to.
The boat's best features Sailing qualities. Lots of room inside for a 30 footer.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Prop walk. It's impossible to back to starboard.
Sailing characterisitcs Easy. Lots of heel makes rudder forces fairly high, though. Have not sailed with a spinnaker yet, but will try that soon.
Motoring characterisitcs Again, easy. Did I mention prop walk? It will do a good 6 knots under power. Noise level is not objectionable.
Liveability Haven't stayed overnight yet, but suspect it will be OK for a few days.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) NA
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Experience was fine. Broker at Sailor's Wharf in St. Pete helped me look for a year, during which he called me with several good possibilities.
Other comments Need to find a manual, which is proving to be difficult. Can figure out where the pipes and wires run very well without it.
