Review of the Hunter 28 by Jim Anzalone

Year built 1992
Location of boat Barnegat Bay NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, lots of boat for the money, good cabin, fast, easy to sail, well built, an all around great boat.
Gear that's been added Bought her used and the previous owner loaded her with lots of goodies. She has air/heat, ref, auto-pilot, GPS and loran.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Easy to sail, walk through swim platform, roomy cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. She a tall rig and the mast is 47 feet high. This makes it hard to clear some bridges other boats her size can get under. When you take a shower the water does not drain to good. You end up getting water in the engine compartment along the engine access bulkhead. The problem is the bulkhead is starting to rot alittle bit because of it. It is also hard to stand up in the bathroom because of the tilted floor.
Sailing characterisitcs She sails GREAT.... Very fast!!! She is easy to reef too and you'll need to reef her early. I recommend asking one reefing point around 15 mph, two around 20, and pull in the jib at 25.
Motoring characterisitcs Very good. I have no problems motoring her. I do love the newer controls that do away the the forward and reverse stick. I wish I could retro fit one.
Liveability Great for 2 and ok for 4. The cabin layout is really nice. My wife sleeps in the v-berth and I get the aft cabin. The kitchen is well thought out with lots of storage and counter space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Yes, they do thier very best to help you with any guestion you nay have.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Yes, get a good surveyor. Ask other sailer what to look for during a survey. When the boat is surveyed be there and make sure everthing is checked correctly.
