Review of the Hunter 37 by Del Wiese

Year built 1989
Location of boat Indian Harbour Beach
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Enthusiastically YES! I did a pretty thorough search regarding used Hunters with performance in mind, but which make good cruisers. The Legend 37 seems to be a good trade off. Very good performance, with lots of room below decks.
Gear that's been added The boat is 1989. I bought it about a year ago. It had Adler Barber 12 vdc refridgeration, CNG stove/oven and autohelm. It had a 107 furling genoa. I added a 120% furling genoa, 135% mylar genoa for racing, asymetrical spinnaker for racing and cruising, 2 bladed max prop, back stay tensioner.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Human engineering of deck and below deck layout. Definitely focussed on cruising, racing suffers from lack of cockpit space. Cruising suffers from lack of on deck storage. I've added West Marine soft on deck storage unit for dock lines and bumpers.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No significant problems to date.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails great! 135 works up to 13/14 knots, 120 upp to 25 (with reefed main). Boat is very fast, infact local PHRF ratings have been reduced to the point that I'm not sure we can compete effectively. Very good performing boat!
Motoring characterisitcs The boat has the stock 2 blade fix prop. I have bought a max prop 2 blade but have not installed it yet. With the fixed 2 blade, I have motored into 2-25 knots of headwind, on the Intercoastal in about 10-12 feet of water, with about 2-3 feet of chop with small pitch, and was able to maintain 4.5-5.5 knots speed. This is the most severe motoring experience to date.
Liveability Have not spent long periods aboard. Major reason for purchasing the Legend 37 was below decks space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from the original owner, the original dealer was the broker. Very pleased with the broker/dealer handling of the deal, recommend without reservation the dealer, Whitley Marine in Jacksonville, FL. Good folks to do business with!
Other comments I think Hunter offers tremendous value. Have owned several CAL boats, looked at a lot of other boats, decide Hunter offered good value. Remain convinced after a year of ownership.
