Review of the Hunter 25.5 by Robert Rose

Year built 1984
Location of boat Lake Allatoona, Georgia
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes......For a 25 foot production boat I would consider it over a Catalina or McGregor just on spaciousness alone.
Gear that's been added The vessel came fuly equipped. Inventory includes a shore power package, built in microwave, built in refrigerator installed behind the companionway ladder, pressure watrer system, depth, knot, compass, vmf, 3 sails, Honda 7.5, new interior cushions, AM/FM Cassette and boom vang. All I did was change the halyards, sheets and cockpit cushions. Probably the best 25.5 around!
Structural or complex improvements No structural improvements. The boat stayed at the marina for years and when I conducted the prepurchase survey, I noted that their was hardly any gel coat cracking anywhere even at stress points.
The boat's best features The roomy interior is what initialy impressed me. I owned a Catalina 25 and their is no comparison aside from the V-berth area. The Hunter 25.5 offers room similar to 27 footers considering the 9' beam. The vessel rides high and points well with one heck of a weather helm built in her design. The openess of the storage areas under the settee and dinette area provides for less mildew.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The salon opening ports have broken from UV exposure and wear and need replacement. The tiller has delaminated in two areas but has been repaired. This is only from years of exposure and use.
Sailing characterisitcs With all halyards to the cockpit, ease of sailand jib raising and lowering makes my life easier, especially in a rolling wake situation. The 150 and standard jib do well and the weather helm is often a fight but the handling is tender and the HUnter points well.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat has a 1984 Honda 7.5 that has very little use. I have had Honda's on other sailboats and they are workhorses!! Under power, the 7.5 takes it to hull speed and is sufficient for our needs is a lake sailing environment. If; however, I wasdoing coastal cruising I would upgrade to a 10-15 horsepower unit for tidal situations.
Liveability If I HAD to live aboard this Hunter, I could get by; however, it does have a porta-potti and little if any room for a holding tank if I were to consider installing a flush MSD. Its a great weekender but that $%#$@ V-berth is too samll for two adults and the only place for two adults to sleep is the quarter birth...I would consdier installing in the cockpit on the port side an opening port for more light and ventilation for the quarter birth. This would help to make that area more palatable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never dealth with them thus far
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A Purchased from private party
