Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Arnie Reischl

Year built 1984
Location of boat Seattle Washington
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would buy the Hunter 37.5 Cutter again. For its size it is very easy to sail single handed or with just two people. It is a wonderful companion to sail the Northwest waters of the U.S. and Canada. I have been sailing for the last sixteen years and look forward to another twenty.
Gear that's been added GPS. Radar. Auto Pilot. Cabin lighting
Structural or complex improvements Sound proofed the Engine area.
The boat's best features Ease of handling in all types of weather.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. What I have experienced with the Yanmar deisel is a reliable engine but an engine that requires pains taking exploration to find the root of engine problems. I have over 1600 hours on the engine. The design of the water exchange into the exhaust manifold is poor, as is the exhaust system. The cooling water entry port will collect carbon residue and cause the engine to overheat after two to three hours of operation. This is very hard to trace to the source and it was a problem for two years until I took the exhaust manifold off the engine to fix a leaking oil line (another poor design) and decide to do more then I should have and found a carbon trap. It is located on the manifold where the water line from the heat exchanger enters the exhaust port. I found carbon that had to be chipped out to find the surface metal. The only other problem would be the gray skies of the Northwest, the boat sits low in the water and the light does not venture into the cabin as well as it could.
Sailing characterisitcs Great cruising and long haul sailing.
Motoring characterisitcs At RPM of greater then 2000, the wheel pulls to the left.
Liveability Great for two people, low in the water.
