Review of the Hunter 28 by Chris Mead

Year built 1992
Location of boat Erie, PA
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yep. It's perfect to learn on. I love how the thing is rigged to the cockpit, everything within easy reach. It's also really forgiving for a new captain with no experience.
Gear that's been added Electronics were shot. Added a depthfinder.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Sails close to the wind. Yanmar seems to be excellent. I can stand up in the cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Head floor is too slanted and narrow...sort of a squeeze. Two sets of spreaders is a real pain when storing the mast.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails close to the wind...easy to handle...quick response.
Motoring characterisitcs Turns on a dime. Yanmar starts right up and putters happily...once the winter is all shaken off.
Liveability Lots of room downstairs. Wish there was an on-board fridge instead of the cooler. Cockpit is okay for 4 adults...more than that and it's a squeeze....150 genoa means no room at the bow.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Called once to get their opinion on leaving the mast up during the winter. They said, go ahead. Nice blokes.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker. Good experience. Holland, MI. Fair and truthful -- the owner loved this boat. That helped.
Other comments The swim deck is really cool. I like the newer models where the center seat is attached and becomes 'part' of the swim platform rather than coming out all together but the step-through is wonderful.
