Review of the Hunter 25.5 by John Preston

Year built 1985
Location of boat Halifax N.S. Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably not
Gear that's been added Not yet, but we plan on adding a marine head because a porta potti has no right on a sail boat(healing, leaky seals) we also plan to put a raised tiller on as the original design is too low and a vang for down wind sailing.
Structural or complex improvements We have boarded in under all settees and v berth and cut corresponding holes in the seats which has added enormous secure storage. We have also added pull out drawers under the companionway step, opening athwart ships which also helped for storage. We found a lot of stress cracks in the transom at the motor mount and gudgeons and on close inspection realized that these areas would have to be reinforced, we then ground out said areas re-did the gell coat and epoxied 3/4
The boat's best features Good space for a 25 foot boat
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I find the glass work in the whole boat to be too light. Hand rails were too light(we have since replaced same with real rails you can stand on)
Sailing characterisitcs Great down wind and beam reach boat but too light and not enough draft for coming to weather.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors great in flat conditions with 8 hp. Honda but again too light in a chop.
Liveability We feel that the only area that can really sleep two is the quarter berth and one of those can not be the least clostorphobic. We have aleviated this problem by making fillers that sit under the main cabin settee cushions and slide across to forn a full double of almost 60
