Review of the Hunter 23 by Steven de Filippis

Year built 1985
Location of boat Occoquon, VA
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I did, this is the second 1985 Hunter 23' i own, i sold the first one because i wanted something smaller. I missed her too much and had to buy another 2 years later.
Gear that's been added Battery charging system. bilge pump.
Structural or complex improvements Yes, in the process of biulding a new cabin door hatch. Designed and biult a 2 battery bank with charging system.
The boat's best features roominess of interior. no other boats in a 22-24' range have quite that much room in the cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. 1. the hatch cover seems to leak. lotts of people with same boat complain about this too. in fact, my previous 1985 hunter 23' leaks. 2. it would be nice if the keel had a retractable centerboard in it. it seems the boat has trouble sailing close to the wind. she seems to fall off the wind a bit.
Sailing characterisitcs It seems it either rains every weekend or the winds are too light where i am. I live in the Washington DC area. It is easy to sail in light and 10-15kt winds.
Motoring characterisitcs motoring seemed very difficult with my old 3.3hp. bought a johnson 9.9hp, very good and easy to motor.
Liveability i just started spending weekends on her with friends, usually 2-3 people. very comfortable for a small boat
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) my dealings with hunter have been nice. they have been helpful with selling me parts or directing me to those who sell or construct parts.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any both were private sale
