Review of the Hunter 40 by Jack Morgan

Year built 1984
Location of boat ????
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1985
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. the mistake that I made was in selling the boat. My wife and i lived on this boat for two years, cruising the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the Florida Keys, as well as the Chesapeake. We often told folks that our dog had 5000 miles of ocean sailing under his belly (true or not), and we never had a problem with this boat. We had the boat in severe conditions on two occasions, and never had a concern. The double reef in the main, or the furling genoa could both together or individually handle the heavy air. The 44 HP Yanmar diesel was a lifesaver, and is a wonderful engine if taken care of.
Gear that's been added Cruising spinnaker, Adler Barber reefer, Bimini, SSB radio, Radar, as well as a wind machine and three large gel-cel batteries as well as many other items.
Structural or complex improvements Added cruising spinnaker gear only.
The boat's best features Its sailing ability is by far its most apeealing quality. By being careful of the weather this boat is an excellent coastal cruiser.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I never had a problem with this boat.
Sailing characterisitcs This boat often sailed away from our cruising when they were running under sail and under engine in an attempt to keep up.
Motoring characterisitcs This boat was probably the fastest sailboat under power that I ever owned.
Liveability We lived "very comfortably" on board for two years.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Whitney's Marine in Jacksonville, Fl. is an excellent dealer to deal with.
Other comments My brother now owns a 1995 Hunter 40.5, and I wish that I owned it.
