Review of the Hunter 460 by Steve Sabree

Year built 2001
Location of boat San Leandro, CA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It has been a great boat with a lot of innovative ideas that make it easy and fun to sail. love the Greatroom concept which keeps the boat light and airy.
Gear that's been added Dodger and Bimini witha transition piece that connects the two.
Structural or complex improvements Added epoxy to anchor locker to facilitate draining.
The boat's best features Stainless steel arch with traveler out of the way. It was also a great place to anchor the Bimini. Shallow draft winged keel. Walk-through transom. Lots of hatches for air and light. In mast main furling. Interior 12V lighting is great. Cockpit layout and stern-rail seats are great. Corian counter tops are fantastic. (Really like the handy trash access. We got the workshop option which is also a big plus. Its our utility room with the washer/dryer option.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Boat rides lower in stern/ higher at bow than was indicated by the factory water line. Also tends to list to port due to weight distribution. YOu have to think about where you put heavy items and there is not much stowage on the starboard side. Lexan sliding hatch should have been installed with some sort of slick material to slide on rather than just resting on gelcoat. I plan on installing teflon strips. It also does not shed water fast enough and can run into gally if rain is hard and wind is from the wrong way (or your spray water with a hose), you have to be very careful when washing. Dinnette table cannot be adjusted by hand as it is too hard to turn. A cresent wrench must be used. Table is still loose and tends to turn. Minor problem, but it should be stiffer and easier to adjust. Minor gelcoat blemishes.
Sailing characterisitcs I really like the way it handles. In mast main furling is terrific and the 110 jib is easy to handle.
Motoring characterisitcs Handles well when backing. 76 HP Yanmar has great power and runs well.
Liveability Great liveaboard boat. It will be even greater when I only have to worry with boat clothes. Could use more stowage but I have not been on a boat yet that couldn't use more.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Great people. Quick to respond.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Could have been better. When you spend that kind of money (biggest purchase I have ever made) you want everything to go smooth.
Other comments I like the features about the boat. I really like the way the boat looks and I get a lot of positive comments about it. I also have had a few (very few) comments about all of the boats supposed shortcomings because it is not their vision of a bluewater, trans-oceanic, cruiser. I think they should continue to live in their water borne, dark, cluttered, difficult-to-maneuver caves and grow their beards and wear old-salt type clothes. I notice they don't leave the dock much to go out and just enjoy a sail on a nice day! I think being confined to those big old heavy huge-displacement boats makes them grumpy.
