Review of the Hunter 212 by DAVID MERRILL

Year built 2000
Location of boat SARASOTA, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We were looking for a moderately priced boat that would hold me and my three kids, as well as be easy to sail It also had to be light enough to trailer behind my minivan. The boat has met our needs nicely.
Gear that's been added It has several options including the hatch, roller furling, bimini, and cushions. We have a Honda 2hp motor.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features We like the open transom and large cockpit. The cabin is large for the size boat. It is easy to sail.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. We have had a problem of hairline cracks around the cabin windows, and the rudder is underdesigned. In heavy winds, we bent the tiller and pulled out the metal plate that holds the rudder assembly. I wish the cabin could be locked so we could store more items there without worry about theft. We keep our boat on the trailer at the boat club.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is easy to sail. We have had it out in 20 knot winds, and it was fun. We have raced it in a couple regattas, and we were no threat to the winners. I don't know if it was our sailing skills, or the boat.
Motoring characterisitcs We use the Honda 2hp long shaft. I like the small Honda because it is easy to take on and off the boat. It has plenty of power to push the boat even in strong winds. We should probably lower the motor mount because the motor comes out of the water when a large person goes forward to the bow.
Liveability It would be OK for a camping trip with small kids, but it is not a live aboard. The cabin is nice for storage.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very positive.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My dealer was poor. He is no longer a Hunter dealer.
Other comments As the kids grow up, I am sure we will go up in size on the boat.
