Review of the Hunter 23 by Joe Hughes

Year built 1985
Location of boat Long Island N.Y.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1988
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added roller furling, lazy jacks, new sails will be putting in a depth sounder.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features Fast and light in weight for trailering.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Woodwork of interior is cheaply constructed.Fitting for table leg in cockpit has rotted out and will have to be replaced. Ports leak.
Sailing characterisitcs While the boat can be a little tender it seems to be faster then other 22 to 25foot boats in my club untill the wind gets a little heavy. It also has a tendency to round up in heavy wind. I should point out that while I have been sailing a lot of years most of it was singlehanded and I may not be as good as I would like to be.
Motoring characterisitcs I push it with a 4.5 Evinrude and it seems to work well. The shaft could be a little longer and it seems to take a little distance to stop probably not the boats problem.Seems to back up fine but I don't do a lot of it.
Liveability Small. I could spend some time in it but not with my wife.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) On the phone a couple of times and they seemed to be helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any From an individual.
Other comments I always thought they were kind of cheaply made but I really didn't have a lot to base that on. I'm happy with my boat but it could certainly be better made.If it were then I probably couldn't afford it.
