Review of the Hunter 33_77-83 by Jim Ford

Year built 1980
Location of boat Lake Texamoa
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes,Without question! This is a well designed sailboat with a great layout, good headroom, very stable platform, easy to singlehand. I ve been caught out in several squalls, (winds exceeding 50-60 mph, per noaa) She has never let me down.
Gear that's been added I have added a new head, hoses, and waste bag, new am/fm, six disc cd, Vhf, new Power Main,& Biradial 135% genoa, new LC_32 Profurl,New bimini, main cover, wheel bag, cockpit cushions, stern perches,(seats)the travler has been relocated to the top of the cabin top,new Campbell Sailer 3 blade prop, am planning to redo the Formica counter top, sink & facet. It came with refrigeration.
Structural or complex improvements In the process of looking into a coulpe of soft spots in cockpit floor, and deck, both near fuel & waste filler openings. To be expected on any boat, after twenty years I say.
The boat's best features The layout, performance, headroom, sailability & handling. Great cruiser holds own in any sitiuation. Motor a bit small, but bullet-proof. Better Prop helps.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. You have to stand on your head, in the head to check oil.): Most original vendors have gone out of business, luckly thier are generic replacements. I still don't think you can get a better boat anywhere for anywhere near the money. This represents a great value in the sailboat $20-30k used market.
Sailing characterisitcs great weekend cruiser, i sail singlehanded a lot or with my wife and 4 kids. We have a blast in all kinds of weather or conditions...
Motoring characterisitcs pulls hard to port in reverse when leaving the slip, I use a hard pull on the starboard dock line to get the boat headed in the right direction when exiting slip. Works great!
Liveability Fine for four on weekends a little crowed after that..
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Great. very helpful...
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any private owner..
Other comments Great boat for the money.. enjoy the hell out of it..
