Review of the Hunter 33_77-83 by steven f.

Year built 1981
Location of boat pt. charlotte, florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Thought I hate to say this but no. The reasons are quite simple, I'm just too big for this boat. The cockpit doesn't allow enough room to stretch out and there is bearly enough room for me and my wife in any berth. Those are my two main complaints about this boat, the others are pettie.
Gear that's been added boom vang, new main sail with dutchman handling system, multiple anchors on the bow, prop strippers (line cutters), added glass to the top of the rudder for a better fit, lots of engine maintance (dont we all), PSS dripless system,
Structural or complex improvements some glass added to the top of the rudder to make a better fit and several additional cleats on the bow and beams. All new running rigging, soon will come the standing rigging.
The boat's best features the cost is quite nice, you get a lot of boat for your money. She handles very well and the H33's with the deep keel are noticably better than the shoal draft's in reguards to handling. Both have done great in foul weather, the boat out handled the crew.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. cock pit design is cramped but the cabin makes up for that. The original engine is too small, previous owner upgraded the engine to a Westerbeke 21a. Main sheet traveler should have been installed on the deck (that too was done by previous owner, he was a great owner, thanks Dick). She should have come with more bilge pumping, both automatic and manual. Getting the rudder off and the drive shaft out is a problem, maybe the shaft should have been angled to allow for both of these and to reduce prop-walk.
Sailing characterisitcs She will get out of her own way but the shoal draft just doesn't point well. With a clean hull, new sails this boat will handle better than many other cruisers of her style and type. We've sailed her in two full gales and both times she handled better than we did. Very light air can be a challange for this boat, good thing there is a large engine in mine.
Motoring characterisitcs lots of prop walk, especially in reverse. The original engine is too small.
Liveability as I said in the beginning, I'm just too big for this boat. If I were anything under 6'2" it would be okay inside. The cockpit is still tight, no way to lay down out there.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) can't answer this one, never owned a new boat
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any again, see above.
Other comments see all the above statements, they say it all for me.
