Review of the Hunter 22 by John Owen

Year built 1985
Location of boat Barnegat Bay, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added Lewmar traveler, VHF.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced tiller, replaced hatch boards, replaced sealer in portlights. Preparing to replace port bulkhead (leaking from chainplate has allowed wood to rot, enabling hull to flex). Replaced pivot pin for center board (worn almost through).
The boat's best features Points very well. Small enough to easily single hand, large enough for weekend cruising w/ wife.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Bad weatherhelm--considering replacing main for one with 2 reefs. Handpump in gally sucks (sorry, no better way to say it). Transom flexes under motor mount--need to reinforce on inside this Spring. Water accumulates in bilge--still no idea from where its coming. Plastic dogs busted on forward deck hatch--need to replace entire hatch now.
Sailing characterisitcs Points very high. Really frustrating weatherhelm. Stable and forgiving in rough weather and water. Tacks/sails hard at anchor. Quick for waterline in light-medium air.
Motoring characterisitcs Hard to keep outboard screw in water in seas. Outboard mount causes the transom to flex. This does not generally inspire confidence.
Liveability Good for weekend cruising. Impossible to actually live on.
