Review of the Hunter 28 by Buddy Richardson

Year built 1992
Location of boat Chesapeake Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1992
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? This boat or a larger Hunter
Gear that's been added Added 150 jib, Orego etoh/electric stove, second battery, cockpit awning/bimini, Taylor heat pump, cell phone, additional halyards, wheel lock
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features easy sailing single handed, walk thru transom, full battan main, Yanmar diesel very reliable and fuel efficient
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. leak in skylight/hatch above salon, port lights leak and or drain into salon, fresh water tank pump failed after about 5 years, water heater leaking now (9 years), shower sump should not drain into bilge without hair catcher. On delivery bow nav. lights not wired and missing jib shackle
Sailing characterisitcs sailed in everything on Chesapeake up to 35 knots motor sailing with 110 jib. Handles well, points well, have to reef main early - 15 knots
Motoring characterisitcs motors well with clean prop. and bottom but 2 blade not very efficient. Doesn't back well
Liveability Very good, plan on installing ac/dc ice box refridge and city water connection
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent, had problem with fuel gauge. It corroded and stopped working. They sent me one at no charge. I was very impressed.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Tidewater Yacht Sales in Havre de Grace, MD and Baltimore, MD. Very good, helpful. Attended some seminars there. Good parts supplier
Other comments I'll keep it and continue to add equipment and ideas
