Review of the Hunter 240 by Raymond Scott

Year built 1998
Location of boat Acworth Ga
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes but i would pay more attention during commisioning. It is the best trailerable boat in its weight and price range.
Gear that's been added Depth finder, vhf radio,a second battery, compass, gps, assymetric spinaker, storm jib, second set of reef points, alchohol stove mounted on the fold down flap by the sink, a second anchor, flare gun, whisker pole, went to a triple pulley for the main sheet, a flag halyard, made a top companion way batten with air vents to cut down on mildew, added a tiller tamer, went with a honda 9.9 engine with electric start great choice
Structural or complex improvements added stand-up pulleys for the spinnaker, padeyes on the mast for a whisker pole, changed the centerboard cheek pulley out for a larger one after it broke for the second time also added a single pulley between the cheek block and the sheave under the mast to create an 8 to 1 and reduce stress on the cheek block. added a hole in the rudder part way down it with a line attached to facilitate raising it.
The boat's best features its easy trailering set up and its ability to go in very shallow when everything is up,cockpit is very roomy, rail seats are very nice
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. center board had to be replaced along with all blocks associated with it the hole it pivots on was drilled in the wrong place, port side cockpit storage had the hinges bolted in wrong place, table is useless, water pump was full of construction debris and died, rudder bounces starting at sea state four and is pounding hard at sea state five and up even with rope pulled tight, seat cushions below slide around even with velcro, centerboard also swings in sea state six, we found one battery wasn`t enough so we upgraded and added a second one, we just found a guardrail stanchion that had a bolt just stuck in with caulk no backing plate or nut, bilge pump hose lets water in when heeled over on the starboard side.
Sailing characterisitcs boat is tender weather helm gets excessive past 12 knots however by reefing the main the helm balances nicely. at 18 knots think about using a storm jib and at 22 knots go to a second reef in the main, assymetric spinnaker is great from close reach to training run, under spinnaker we started planing at 12 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs we have a 9.9 honda fourstroke mileage is 15mpg,due to it being offset you have to trim direction of motor for each throttle setting to center the tiller. 5.6knots at half throttle 6.2 knots at full.
Liveability longest trip was 3 days 120 miles in the gulf with my wife and son. porta potti privacy especially at night and access to the rear berths are the biggest problems.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) we had to get hunter involved to push our dealer to complete repairs of the centerboard problem. they were very helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any they sold me a remote conrol start and steering for the motor but when i came to get the boat they claimed they could not figure how to mount it. they sold me a larger battery but there again on delivery could not fit it, i later did this myself. they quoted me one motor but accidently sold it to someone else. the amounts quoted for financing proved to be wrong when we closed the deal adding two years of payments. when the centerboard problem arose it took them three months to do a two week repair twice during this we were told it was completed only to arrive and find the work not done. thankfully their entire shop staff departed and the dealer has now been sold.
