Review of the Hunter 240 by Daniel Busche

Year built 1999
Location of boat Garden City (Bear Lake), Utah
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES, I just received my new 240 two weeks ago, and love everything about it. I used to own a 1994 Mac 26 and felt that it was inferior quality to the Hunter. The rig, the mast, the boom, everything seems better built than Macgregor. Because of the large beam of the boat, my wife feels it is just as big as the Mac 26. The cockpit with the stern rail seats has a lot more room than the Mac did.
Gear that's been added I bought it with the CDI Roller Furling Jib from the factory. Great addition. Makes sailing so much easier and faster to set up and take down. My wife thinks I am lazy though.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Wide Beam, Great Cockpit and stern rail seats, cockpit cushions are great, easy to trailer and easy to raise mast, compared to Macgregor. Overall good quality and workmanship
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Not having a private porta potty.
Sailing characterisitcs Great boat in light winds. Tacks well, the rudder is big, so it is easy to handle and steer. Reef early when wind gets above 10 MPH. Even when noone else is reefing, reef anyway. The boat handles better when not heeling too much. When the dealer delivered the boat to me, we went on a test sail at the Great Salt Lake with Winds in the 8-10 MPH range. We both sat on the heeling side of the boat for demonstration purposes on how well the water ballast works. It is uncomfortable, but it felt safe. We tried to get the windows under water, but couldn't do it yet.
Motoring characterisitcs I use a Yamaha 6HP. Very quiet and efficient. If you need to turn on a dime, just steer with tiller and motor. I bought an extension for the motor, since it is hard to reach. Since the boat has no keel, it motors very well.
Liveability We have three small children, ages 3 through 9 and all five of us slept for one night on the boat. It is a bit crowded, but possible for a weekend. Two kids in the V-berth, our nine year old son on the bench and Mom and Dad in the aft berth. The only problem is using the potty in the middle of the night.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Did not deal with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Excellent service! They still contact me how the boat is and if they can help in any way. They also take you for a demo sail when they deliver the boat.Intermountain Sailboats: Mark and Travis are the best!
