Review of the Hunter 212 by JOHN SCHOPPAUL

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES.  
Gear that's been added ROLLER FURL JIB. I AM GAINING CONFIDENCE EVERY DAY I SAIL THIS BOAT. I WILL BE LOOKING FOR A SPINNAKER IN THE SPRING, AND START EXPLORING LONG ISLAND SOUND. A AM ALSO INSTALLING AN ANCHOR LIGHT.  
Structural or complex improvements NOT YET. THE ENGINE BRACKET APPEARS NOT VERY DURABLE, I MAY BEEF UP THE LOWER BRACKET WITH A BACKING PLATE AND BOLTS. ALSO, ALTHOUGH NOT STRUCTURAL, THE HATCH IS BADLY IN NEED OF A RE-DESIGN.  
The boat's best features SIMPLICITY- DEFINATELY NOT A RACER. SPACE- LOTS IN A 21' EASE OF MAINTENANCE- THE LARGEST HUNTER THAT IS PLASTIC, AND ALMOST UNSINKABLE. I CAN SAIL THE BOAT WITH A BUNCH OF LANDLUBBERS, AND MANAGE QUITE FINE.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. THE HATCH "ARRANGEMENT" IS POORLY DESIGNED, IN THAT IT IS NOT LOCKABLE NOR EASY TO STOW WHEN NOT IN USE.  
Sailing characterisitcs MOSTLY THE CONNECTICUT RIVER. THE WIND IS OFTEN LIGHT, AND REQUIRES THE USE OF THE MOTOR TO DRIVE TO SOME AIR. IN MODERATE WINDS ( FOR ME, SO FAR, THAT IS 9-12 KTS), THE BOAT MOVES VERY WELL.  
Motoring characterisitcs I HAVE NO DESIRE TO ATTEMPT TO RAISE THE MAST MORE THAN ONCE A YEAR, IT IS A SLIP FOR ME. THAT SAID, THIS IS A PRETTY LIGHT BOAT, AND IF, IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE BOAT CRACKER-JACK FILLED WITH GEAR, YOU WON'T NEED TOO BIG OF A CAR TO TOW IT WITH.  
Liveability I WOULDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO SPEND THE NIGHT ON THIS BOAT, UNLESS IT WAS WITH A VERY PRETTY FEMALE. THAT SAID, THE LONG "BENCH SEATS" COULD EASILY EACH FIT A SLEEPING BAG, AND ON A STAR FILLED NIGHT, THIS MAY BE QUITE COMFORTABLE.

Other comments THE ROLLER FURLING JIB IS A MUST. DON'T GET A MOTOR ABOVE A 5hp. THE "5" MOVES IT ALONG QUITE WELL, AND AS A MATTER OF FACT, I THINK I'M REACHING MY HULL SPEED AT AROUND HALF THROTTLE WITH MY HONDA FOUR-STROKE. A LARGER MOTOR WILL NOT FIT ON THE MOUNTING BRACKET( TOO NARROW), AND I FEEL THE WIEGHT OF A FOUR-STROKE ABOUT MAXES OUT THE BRACKET AS WELL. THIS IS A VERY FORGIVING BOAT. IN MY EXPERIENCE, WHEN THE WIND PICKS UP ON A REACH, THE WEATHER HELM INCREASES, AND IF YOU DON'T PLAY WITH THE MAIN-SHEET AND DE-POWER IT, THE INCREASED HEEL PULLS ENOUGH OF THE RUDDER OUT OF THE WATER SO THAT YOU HEAD TO WIND. --- MORE BOAT AND MORE FUN FOR THE BUCK---
