Review of the Hunter 25.5 by John Busciglio

Year built 1985
Location of boat St Petersburg Fl.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? For sure, I got a great deal on this boat. It was well taken care of before I got my hands on it. I actually got such a good deal I was rushed to take delivery before he changed his mind.
Gear that's been added I replaced the Loran with a GPS I got a new depth finder and I replaced the VHF radio. I added a AM/FM CD radio. Shortly after I got the boat the Auto helm went out so I replaced it as well.
Structural or complex improvements No!
The boat's best features Its wide cockpit makes it easy to move around. The wide walkway around the deck makes it easy to move back and forth on the deck. All the halyards are tailed back to the cockpit and with a roller furling, sail this baby is easy. I also like the pop up, it allows for more head room and light into the galley area.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The bow rail has a broken weld and it is loose I replaced the weld with a stainless steel bolt which is hold all right for now. The Bow was not designed for an anchor to mount up front. The boom is mounted too low and does not allow for a bimini tall enough to stand under to be mounted. Okay I know it’s a small boat. But it sure would be nice it I could put a higher bimini on her. Down below the sink pumps don’t work, I plan to replace them with electric pumps. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM there is no bilge pump, I would like to know how to get one installed but there is no passage for the drain lines????????????
Sailing characterisitcs FORGIVING, Fast turn reaction, I know because I had to dodge a piling missing it by inches. I was totally impressed at how close I got before I started to turn and I missed it. I sail the golf of Mexico along the coast and mouth of Tampa bay. I have had her in some rough water and she seems to handle just fine. Oh and she gets off sandbars easy too.
Motoring characterisitcs Well as I said above she turns on a dime, I have an out board Johnson sailmaster 6h power. I would like more speed eventually. She handles the wakes of other boats well.
Liveability I could live on it so long as I have a marina with good shower facilities. It doesn't store much clothing so I would have to limit myself to a small wardrobe. But its do able.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have only spoke to Hunter dealers at boat shows. Most recent this past november at the Vinoy in St pete.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any NA
Other comments I love this boat I will regrett having to get rid of her one day. Unless its to get her big new sister.
