Review of the Hunter 240 by Mark Kissel

Year built 1998
Location of boat Cary, NC
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. This boat suits my sailing style just great. I wanted a boat that was large enough to be comfortable for a one or two night stay, but small enough to trailer easily from lake to coast.
Gear that's been added Added a VHF radio, knot/log meter, second fuel tank, upgraded foam and fabric on all interior cushions.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Sails great. Like the nice roomy cockpit. Roller furl is great.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Cockpit lockers have no drains. Rudder pivot bearing is too loose. Jam cleats for jib sheets are worthless when singlehanding. Cured all of these problems fairly easily.
Sailing characterisitcs The 240 is very well behaved. Sails upwind amazingly well. Downwind performance could be enhanced with a spinnaker. Although the boat heels quite a bit in gusts, handling is predictable. Reef early.
Motoring characterisitcs The 8 horse Tohatsu pushes the boat just fine. Reverse could use a little more bite. Slow speed turns are tricky.
Liveability This boat is great for occasional overnighters. Roomy cockpit is comfortable for four. Both fore and aft berths are large.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Dealt with Hunter only once. Personnel answered my questions fully and seemed to have excellent knowledge of my model.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No comment.
