Review of the Hunter 336 by Kelley Gordham

Year built 1995
Location of boat Portland, Oregon
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! This is my 3rd Hunter, but the first new boat in a number of years. She does as well up the Coast of Washington State and the San Juans as she does in the Columbia River.
Gear that's been added Refrigeration, autohelm, spinakker, bigger primaries (winches), rigid vang, inverter/charger, and a third bank of batteries.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features After a long, slow learning process, I finally discovered how to sail her. She is substantially different than my 91 Hunter 30. She does best down wind, but initially I was hesitant to heel her very far...big mistake, she does quite well on a heel. I love the room...biggest 34 there is, I think.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rediculously small, useless traveller that came stock on the 336...the next year, they moved it to the cabin top.
Sailing characterisitcs Lively, especially for a cruiser. Fast on a run, but points nicely. (I am unbeaten in the Hunter regattas in the Columbia River!)
Motoring characterisitcs REasonable...I prefer to sail...I do find that backing her into the slip is quite easy...much to the amazement of my dockmates.
Liveability Roomy, well-thought out. Nice wood and the fixtures are reasonable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hmmm...Initially...not a very positive experience. I was given the run around about engine mounting issues...The local dealer (no longer a Hunter dealer) was useless.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any See above!
Other comments I love it! As does my family!
