Review of the Hunter 420 by Buck Harrison

Year built 2001
Location of boat Norfolk, Va.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Very definitely, yes
Gear that's been added Yes... watermaker, second refrigiration system, flat-screen tv's, computer, much more
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features openess of salon, stainless steel arch, electric sheet winch, in-mast furling, large livable aft cabin w/ walk around bed
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. house batteries and engine start battery are paralleled when ignition key is on. this allows engine start battery to over charge when running engine for long periods
Sailing characterisitcs so-so sailing characterictics... large main, small fractional rig jib don't drive boat as well as hoped
Motoring characterisitcs excellent
Liveability excellent; with huge aft cabin, walk around queen bed, large open salon, A/C, nice galley two heads
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) haven't delt directly w/ Hunter
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Norton's Yacht Sales, Deltaville, Va.... is excellent... couldn't say enough good things about them... it is easy to see why they have been Hunter's #1 dealer several times
Other comments I really enjoy my boat... doesn't have the problems many discuss concerning the H-450... no real problems running the boat from Norfolk to Fla. in October... offshore much of the way. Some say Hunters are not Blue Water boats... I intend to take mine to the Caribbean in Fall, 2002... we'll see
