Review of the Hunter 23 by Rick Romito

Year built 1988
Location of boat Orlando, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, Graet Boat!
Gear that's been added Backstay adjuster, VHF, Loran, depth guage, bimini, and swim ladder.
Structural or complex improvements Backstay adjuster. I ordered the parts and installed it myself.
The boat's best features Strong and stable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rigging is the biggest problem. I made a "gin" pole and use the mainsheet to raise the mast. Along with this I replaced the forestay with an adjustable one to make it easier to connect - connection is in the anchor locker.Mast step is very unstable until the stick is most of the way up. It needs the side stabalizers of the 23.5.
Sailing characterisitcs Good in light wind and handles well in 20 knots also.
Motoring characterisitcs 5hp is small, but pushes it along OK.
Liveability Good for a long weekend or a week if dockside facilities are available every 3 days.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Fair to good.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
