Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Dan Eurich

Year built 1979
Location of boat Bay Harbor, Bay City, Mi.
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, its a fast boat, a little under powered, (10 hp.) but is easy to sail single-handed and built strong.
Gear that's been added I put a new Harken roller fuller on it, also a lazy jack, this comming year I will add a new compass and a auto pilot.
Structural or complex improvements Not so far, everything is OK structuraly on the boat.
The boat's best features My 79 Hunter is well built, it has a skeg and seperate spreader holddowns.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I would have liked a twin instead of a single 10 horse because the single vibrates quite a bit at lower speeds. Also another 5 horsepower would be nice.
Sailing characterisitcs I usually day sail out in Saginaw Bay. I don't race but like any sailor I check my speed against other boats and my 30 Hunter holds its own or beats most other boats the same size. I've been out in 30-40 mph winds and the boat handles fine.
Motoring characterisitcs The 10 horse single cylinder is a little underpowered in heavy weather, 7 mph at 3/4 throttle in calm sea's. In heavy sea's it slows down to 2 or 3 mph.
Liveability It has plenty of room for two people. 4 people get in each others way after a weekend.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I really haven't had to use them much.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a broker at Breanans Marine in Bay City. The broker was fair and helpfull. The boat was stored at Andersons and they are dishonest people. I stored there the first year I had the boat but the dishonest treatment I recieved made me move my cradle over to Bay Harbor. I store my boat there, while it cost more to store there its cheaper in the long run because there are no tricks being played on you.
Other comments Its a great boat and easy to sail.
