Review of the Hunter 23 by David Menold

Year built 1987
Location of boat Barneget Bay, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? This is our 4 sail boat we have had all O'Days a 222, 25 , and a 30. this is our first hunter and I can say ,I am most impressed and I still have to fine tune the riging.
Gear that's been added GPS
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Although limited use so far, the boat seems very stable and a great weekender. The wife is very happy also it doesn't overwhelm her and can help with the sails.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Fiiberglass motor mount looks week. Looks like the chainplates were leaking. NOt looking forward to stepping the mast.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat handles well in 10-15 kts winds seems very stable. Looking forward to putting a storm jib on and trying a little stronger weather.
Motoring characterisitcs Came with a 5 HP Nissan ,I would prefer a little more power especially if I am heading out the inlet.
Liveability Ok overnight.
