Review of the Hunter 420 by Tim Wacker

Year built 1999
Location of boat Lake Erie
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Overwhelmingly, yes!!!
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements currently reinforcing the chain plates per the factory recall of the first 30 hulls of the 420
The boat's best features wonderful cruising layout below and it sails beautifully!!!!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. the sending units for monitoring of the fuel and holding tanks are poor and I would recommend a different setup of thr anchor windlass to more easily allow use of a 2 anchor set. The water pump on the refigeration unit is poor. I'm already on my third one!!!
Sailing characterisitcs very efficient -- moves well even in light breezes but really comes alive in the 15 to 20 knot range. The helm is rather stiff with the optional autohelm. I have the furling mainsail. Trimming it takes a little getting used to.
Motoring characterisitcs Be careful as there is ALOT of freeboard and the wind has considerable affect on handling.
Liveability WONDERFUL!!!!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
