Review of the Hunter 336 by Charles Holt

Normal wind strength 10-15 knots

Liveaboard? No  
Owner bought the boat in 95  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I live on the Intercoastal Waterway, I would think twice about the mast height. I am blocked from going east by two 50' bridges. I can go west to Texas.  
Gear that's been added I have added DGPS, Autohelm ST60 wind, AC, numerous small items. I added a macerator and three way valve.  
Structural or complex improvements None  
The boat's best features Price, I do not intend to go around the Cape or the world. I do want to go around the Gulf so why buy a boat three times the price when my Hunter is fine for the Gulf. If you are careful, you will never be more than three days from land in the gulf.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I cannot get the sails to trim "By the Book". There is little or no instruction provided by Hunter for the B&R rigging. No problems with the boat that were not my fault.  
Sailing characterisitcs Difficult downwind, I usually try not to sail closer to about 30 degrees to downwind and jibe back and forth. I will furl the jib if I have a long leg. It seems to stay blocked most of the time downwind.  
Motoring characterisitcs I replaced the standard two blade with a three blade. I enjoy motoring, hence living on the Intercoastal. I burn about a half gallon an hour at 2500 RPM and 6 knots.  
Liveability Little short or storage for four people but we do not plan a four week cruise without a store on the way.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Not good. The dealer is no longer a Hunter dealer. He knew very very little about the boat.  
Other comments Love it.
