Review of the Hunter 290 by Granville Scott

Year built 2001
Location of boat Deltaville, Virginia
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Most emphatically yes! We have yet to discover anything about the 290 that we don't like. Everyone who comes aboard her is impressed with how well-equipped she is for less than 30 feet, and the dealer who sold it to us has subsequently sold several more to people who coveted ours!
Gear that's been added Additional safety gear for our two children, ages three and eight. A BoatUS 9.2 dinghy. An extending boathook. A coffeemaker. Everything else we needed was included in the Hunter Pack!
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features Two private cabins. The VHS mounted so that it can be used at either the Nav table or the cockpit. The 6'2" headroom. The furling main makes sailing with small children a no-brainer.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No complaints here. Everything that has needed attention has been promptly repaired by our dealer. Kudos to Norton's Yacht Sales in Deltaville!
Sailing characterisitcs "Colette" points remarkably well for a short (29') and broad (10') little lady. We were not expecting much in the way of performance, especially with the furling main---but we were bowled over by her nimble helm, and we have clocked 8 mph under sail on the GPS. Even my hyper-critical brother-in-law (a former Coastie and life-long sailor) was impressed.
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring is....well, it's motoring. Tyler thinks she sounds like "The African Queen". We are fortunate in that we don't have to motor more than about 5-10 minutes before we get into sailable waters.
Liveability Tight, but livable, for a family of four. We have survived a couple of rainy weekends aboard. The "one butt" galley is short on working room, but we have improvised by exporting appliances and cookware to the ample storage lockers located throughout the boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Norton's Yacht Sales in Deltaville has won the #1 Customer Satisfaction Award from Hunter for the past few years, and they work hard to earn it. I would urge anyone who is interested in a Hunter to pay them a visit. They are prompt, courteous, low-key and scrupulously honest. Their lead engineer spent a full day with us, explaining the operation and recommended maintenance procedures on all systems. We also attended their ASA Sailing School, and were pleased with the thoroughness of the instruction.
Other comments The 290 is a GREAT boat for the money! And unless I win the lottery, or Santa leaves a Hinkley in my stocking, I plan to sail her for the next 20 years.
