Review of the Hunter 40 by charles knupp

Year built 1986
Location of boat fort lauderdale florida
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength Press here to select
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? absolutely
Gear that's been added gps cd changer
Structural or complex improvements changed berths on port and starboard; installed water tanks under each berth, adding 100 gal water to existing 105 gal;
The boat's best features seaworthyiness; almost no weatherhelm; that wonderful Yanmar engine; nice deck space, plenty of cockpit space, strong rigging;
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. stanchions, wiring, electrical grounding, poor access to the fiberglass tank the exhaust and water mix in { tank has split and has been patched with epoxies, 5200, etc because replacement is almost impossible; securing batteries is a big problem.
Sailing characterisitcs boat steers great; boat is slow in light wind, maybe I need more sail area and or reduce weight we carry;
Motoring characterisitcs boat motors very well; fast; steers well in forward and reverse;
Liveability being an older boat, it really can't compare to the newer boats; for cruises, ok; for living aboard, storage is a problem.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) haven't
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought from private party
Other comments I've had a 32 Endeavor, 27 Columbia, 36 Columbia, 39 Irwin, 36 Soverel, 34 Hunter, and a bunch of smaller boats; excluding the 36 Columbia which was a Tripp design, this is the most sail-able of them all; the boat is really a joy to sail; it's performance in rough seas is very reassuring;
