Review of the Hunter 23 by Joe Upchurch

Year built 1985
Location of boat Lake Lanier, Georgia
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Unsure - but probably would
Gear that's been added None
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Sailability and forgiveness for a new sailor approching his 60's. Also, it seems the price was manageable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have an unspecified water problem in the salon when I sail in good wind.I've investigated hull, throught hull, rudder mount - all zilch. But when she heels, your feet get wet if you're downstairs.
Sailing characterisitcs Seems fast. Passes a lot of boats in the same size, same sail area. Can be tender, even ornery pointing upwind. In really brisk wind she can be downright abusive upwind, but fairly easily assumes normal manageable self.
Motoring characterisitcs Hardly ever use the motor except for leaving and entering the slip.
Liveability Okay for me. Somewhat like a camping trip. but with all the comforts except a shower. But for two...
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Their responses to my questions via this page have been courteous and timely.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Spending money is never a good experience for me. These transactions (I've bought two boats there) were relatively painless. The broker (salesguy) was most helpful on both occasions.
