Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by pitman

Year built 1984
Location of boat Grapevine TX
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes- Good boat for the money. Sails well with a great cabin layout.
Gear that's been added Boat was well equipped when we purchased it. All we have had to do is add a Gas grill.
Structural or complex improvements All we have had to do is maintain what was there. Boat already had A/C and being that we are land locked there is no need for autopilot or many of the other devices needed not coastal sailing
The boat's best features I like the high aspect rig as it allows me to out point many of my fellow sailors. The B&R rig does cost me down wind but who has fun sailing down wind anyhow. The cabin is very comfortable and is well laid out. We really like the table layout in the cabin, its great for card playing. We entertain a lot on the boat and we have no problems sailing with 6 adults.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. All our repairs so far have been small
Sailing characterisitcs Boat points well and is very responsive. She sails well in both light and heavy wind as long as you start reefing when it gets over 20 mph winds. I have never sailed the boat in over 30 mph winds but feel confident that if you reef she can handle it. I really like the fact that my boat has a 155 jib.
Motoring characterisitcs All we use the engine for is to get in and out of the marina.
Liveability I have never spent more then a night on the boat but have always been comfortable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not had any dealings with Hunter
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the boat for owner
Other comments For the age and money I can not think of a boat that I would rather have. I spent about a month reading up on what my next boat was going to be. Decided on the Hunter 31 and then found the one I wanted
