Review of the Hunter 36_80-82 by John Stamps

Year built 1980
Location of boat Corpus Christi Tx
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes,I feel it is a solid boat,I am useing it for charters.I like the layout of the interior, and with the amount of headroom inside it is very spacious.I have had a lot of compliments.
Gear that's been added A profurl was added right before I purchased the vessel.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features The boat is very easy to single hand,it backs well in reverse, and the boom is agood height. I am 6'1 so I like the headroom in the cabin and the V berth.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I feel if the wheel were smaller the cockpit would be more user friendly.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails very well I have had it above hull speed on many occasions,it turns very sharp also.I feel it sails at a good angle to the wind and we always have a lot of wind here and Corpus Christi Bay can get pretty mean.
Motoring characterisitcs I bought the boat in Houston, and we motored the whole way to Corpus Christi. The wind was on the nose the whole way.We motored along at 5 to 6knots. We followed a towboat in the I C W and logged 200nautical miles in 36 hours. The hardest part was Matagorda bay at 1 am. We were going straight into waves that would bury the bow. That would slow us to 1 to 2 knots, anyone that has traveled the I C W knows that one cannot deviate from course or you will run aground. My 36ft. has a 20hp. Yanmar that I am satisfied with.
Liveability The 36 ft. would be very comfortable for a couple to live on.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I was dissatisfied, after the contract was written and the survey was done, the owners took the boat out and I feel ran it hard. 3 port screens were knocked out,and items that were included on survey were taken off the boat. Then when I tried to deliver the boat to home,Ihad problems with the engine overheating that were not present at seatrial. I drove 500miles round trip,4 times trying to get the problem fixed and a week of vacation.
Other comments There were a lot of comments about hunters not being solid boats, but from what I've seen on my 36, I'd buy it again.
