Review of the Hunter 450 by Len Fagan

Year built 2001
Location of boat Portsmouth RI
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes-We purchased the boat for its size live aboard comfort and overall value.
Gear that's been added Raytheon radar, color plotter with DGPS, auto pilot, bow thruster, genset, furling main, electric halyard winch, full canvas, awlgrip painted hull.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features Comfort-The space and interior layout is great. As much room as larger sailboats that we looked at. The on deck space in the stern area makes for a floating resort with the two full length cushions.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had minimil problems. Items that have been issues include small leaks from the bottom flange of both heads, portholes open hard and screens are a pain to install, the bow thruster switch failed which was the onley serious problem.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails very comfortable and takes a sea quite good. This is not a high performance boat but a coastal cruiser and her speed reflects this. The jib sheet position is a bit awkward as it is against the shrouds when close hauled. Down wind sail position with the main is limited by shrouds. I am satisfied with the boats sailing performance.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat motors well with the 76 hp yanmar. I can cruise at hull speed (8.2 kn) with no problem at 3000 rpm.
Liveability Excellent. My wife and I with our dog have spent several long weekends and have been satisfied. This was a prime reason for purchasing the boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent- I visited the factory to inspect the boat and was very impressed.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Excellent experience. I purchased the boat from Sailing Specialties in Mystic Conn. They added some of the electronics plus did the Awlgrip painting of the hull.
Other comments The boat is a good value for the price I paid verses the boat. I intend to sail to Fla in winter and beyond for extended live aboard periods and I believe I will be satisfied.
