Review of the Hunter 170 by Jim Motley

Year built 2000
Location of boat Montgomery Al
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this is a great boat. It has taken some getting use to after keel boat sailing for 15 years, but the boat is a blast. Mine has the spinnaker option which is great for those light air days and helps in down wind sailing. The boom is high which makes for less problems while on a tack, and the boat is super easy to set up and clean up.
Gear that's been added Nothing, nice thing about this size boat is there is not much you can add. Did add a mooring cover. Have been told these composit boats do not like the sunshine.
Structural or complex improvements None at this time.
The boat's best features Easy to trailer, easy set up, powerfull rig, easy to board with open transom, pulls like a freight train under spinnaker and easy to keep up. Sails well with one to three adults depending on wind conditions.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Main sail needs some reef points, which we will do soon.
Sailing characterisitcs Calm fun up to 10kts, fast and fun to 15kts, scary past that. Boat will surf down wind, but care needs to be taken to gibe without capsizing in heavy winds. Easy to sail solo, best with two, again, needs more reef points. Not as balanced under just main as I would have thought, but perfect with the jib or spinnaker out. Get the cockpit cushions, best money spent.
Motoring characterisitcs Only motor when needed, leave the board down or you will move more sideways than forward. Nissan 3.5 is more than enough to get around, flawless motor.
Liveability Well, not exactly my cup of tea.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter and the JY folks have been helpful answering questions. Really no problems to speak of though.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments I have sailed Catalina's most of my life, and did not get the Hunter rig idea and all. I must say this boat changed my opinion about this brand. It comes with North Sails, Harken hardware, quality running and standing rigging anf a nice galvanized trailer. Alot of boat for this price.
