Review of the Hunter 260 by Roger VInyard

Year built 1998
Location of boat New Mexico
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I originally bought the boat because: 1. I liked it. 2. I got a good deal on it
Gear that's been added Not really. Fans
Structural or complex improvements No - the boat seems to be well built for the conditions I sail it in.
The boat's best features 1. Trailerable. 2. Mast stepping features - I cna do this myself with the mainsheet
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The weld on my mast raising pole broke causing the mast to drop about 6". The dealer is seeing if this can be replaced with the boat out of warranty. Also, I noticed a crack at the transom fiberglass where the ladder is.... Need to follow up with the dealer to get this repaired before winter sets in.
Sailing characterisitcs I've sailed in San Francisco bay on a J22. Other than that - mostly sailing on lakes in breezy conditions. The bay area was very windy (~18 knots) with decent swells (~3')
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 8 hp outboard - I have to rev it up sometimes when I think the current is fighting against me.... Other than that, it seems to work fine.
Liveability I could live on this boat. It has sleeping quarters underneath the cockpit area for two people. Also, there is sleeping quarters up in the bow. (most likely for a couple of kids) The boat needs to have better shelving/pantry setup for fodd items, pans, clothes, etc.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven't had to deal with them directly, although I was promised a bergee when I bought the boat - never got that. I did get the coffee mugs when I filled out a survey.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My dealer is very nice. He has made sure that not only am I happy with the boat, but he answers all of my questions about the boat, and has been helpful in getting parts for me at a reduced cost. This guy sells very low volume of boats, but his people skills are very skilled. If anyone in the Southwest is looking for a Hunter dealer - contact Dan Gallasini.... He is in the white pages.
Other comments Overall, I like this boat very much. It's given me a fine introduction to sailing and I see myself continuing sailing until the end. Hopefully, a few more decades.... I'd buy another Hunter in the future.
