Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Charlie

Year built 1981
Location of boat Madisonville. LA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, a great boat that is an excellent bargain. I am the third owner of this vessel and other than the previous owner letting some of the equipment go, the boat is in great shape.
Gear that's been added Autohelm 4000ST, the previous owner failed to tell me he had worked on the Simrad autopilot remote and left the screws out of the back plate, so the first storm fried the autopilot. Autohelm depth sounder and speed log. Just purchased a complete set of Newfound Metals Bronze Portlights. I will be starting this project in the fall.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features The strength of the hull and the design. When they said "they don't make them like that anymore" it brings this boat to mind. Bringing her home from Panama City, FL we encountered 10-12 foot seas and 40-45 knot winds, the boat was very forgiving, even with a new skipper at the helm.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Holding tank is original and giving me a little odor but no leaks yet. Probably look at replacing it next year. Portlights are terrible, broken, cracked, and leak badly.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs My boat has the 30 hp Yanmar which I find works well.
Liveability Don't live aboard yet, but the boat has excellent room below. Has more room than some of the 40 footers I've seen.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I've contacted them on several occasions about replacement parts and they have been very helpful. Considering they made this vessel 20 years ago. They have been very helpful in finding subcontractors of parts for my boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My broker was Panama City Yacht Sales who were helpful with my purchase.
